Research – “Breaking Patterns”

If you know that a physical pattern of clenched teeth and tight jaw muscles increases the stress levels in your body, then you reverse that pattern to decrease the stress – simply slacken the jaw muscles. If you know that a pattern of negative thinking increases your propensity to stress-related discomfort, then you reverse that pattern to decrease the stress – you employ positive-thinking techniques.

The Calm Slowdown

Just as you can quieten a distressed child by speaking softly, just as you can appease an angry adult by breathing easily, speaking slowly and appearing totally calm, just as you can soothe a hysterical person by speaking in slow, measured tones so you too can calm yourself by adopting these outward expressions.

The Technique

  • Remember the conditions of calm

  • Commence power breathing techniques.Concentrate on making your breathing slower and deeper.Do this for a minute or so.

  •  Make a conscious effort to slow down all of your physical actions.

  •  Force your feet and hands to move slowly and purposefully.Think about every movement you make.Avoid folding your arms, crossing and uncrossing your legs, twitching and so on.Every moment should be slow and purposeful.Even slower than you believe seems natural.

  •  Make a conscious effort to slow down your speech.Think about the pace of your words.Speak slower than you think sound natural.

  •  Even if the pace seems unnatural to you, continue to breathe, move and speak slowly and purposefully, thinking about every physical actions you make.Continue to do this even after you are feeling calm and relaxed, and will remain that way.
